It has been found in various studies that lights emerging from mobiles, laptop and tablets disturb sleep. Disturbance in sleep can varies from delayed sleep, short sleep and irritability.
This happens because of the irregularity in production of hormone “melatonin”. Melatonin is a hormone which is produced by pineal gland. Pineal gland is located right in between of both eyebrows in middle of forehead.
Pineal gland is stimulated by darkness and its production melatonin hormones secretes at night. For both diurnal and nocturnal species darkness stimulates the melatonin production. Basically it is the window which signals whole body about the night time and daytime.
It has been observed that exposure of pineal gland to light especially short wavelength, blur light can slow or even stops its production. Studies shows that a two hour exposure to any sort of light emerging from self luminous electronic equipment can suppress melatonin production by 22% resulting in decreased production which affect sleep. This is widely affected when these equipments are used before going to the bed.
As we know that sleep is the simplest way to reduce injury or illness risk and improved performance. For elite athletes, professional, students sleep is an important part of subject preparation and even more important in recovery.
Less sleep has found to be reason for the injuries in young ones and poor performing athletes. National sleep foundation recommends 7-9 hrs of sleep for adults and 8-10 hrs for adolescents.
